Alrighty Then

I got a message from someone (ahem DJD) to update this little diddy of a blog and I told him I would by the weekend because I thought for sure I could think up enough fodder from the past two months to write about.  Well…I’m not so sure.  Now that it is officially fall (it is officially fall right?) there is a holiday smell in the air and a little bounce in my step.  Spring/Summer are my favorite seasons but let’s face it, this past year felt like living in a crematorium so I welcome the lower temps and humidity.  Not just welcome them, I have a spare bed and bath reserved and am prepared to be at their beck and call if they promise to stick around for a while.

We have now started the months of uppers – October, November, December – when everyone starts being nice and a little more charitable which will be followed by the months of downers – January and February – when everyone is annoyed and irritable.  Ok maybe that’s just me.  Regardless we’re in an upper and I’m actually excited it’s October.  Colors will start becoming vibrant and of course Halloween is merely a few weeks away.

I won’t even attempt to write an entry on Halloween because compared to some of you who are Halloween enthusiasts, my entry would be pathetic and sad.  And admittedly I haven’t always been so jazzed about it.   I think working at a preschool has definitely helped.  There are just so many cute crafts and songs and the kids are uber pumped about dressing up.  Yesterday we went on a field trip to a pumpkin patch and I was probably more excited than they were.

Our school Halloween party is a week from tomorrow and I’m still trying to put together my costume.  Last year I went as a Ninja Turtle and this year I want to go as a Ghostbuster.  I’m borrowing a pack back vacuum to serve as my proton pack but am having a hard time locating a jumpsuit to wear.  Today a friend said he would mail me one of his old flight suits from when he was in the Marine Corps which would be perfect but I’m a little nervous it won’t get here in time.  Fingers crossed.

This year I’m even planning on helping to decorate the outside of the house and have already bought a few things to get the ball rolling.  Who knows, with this festive attitude I may even go to a haunted house.  Yeah right.  I had a traumatic experience (oh it was traumatic alright don’t you worry, that is if you’re a wimpy 10 year old girl) when I was in the 6th grade and have never gotten over it.  I tried going to one in the 9th grade but it didn’t work out to well and I break into a sweat and start having heart palpitations just thinking about it.

There won’t be any watching of scary movies either as I will most likely stick to the lame TV crap available on ABC Family this holiday season.  Baby steps, baby steps.  I “watched” Quarantine a few months ago but that viewing was done at high noon through my fingers with the remote firmly in hand ready to change the channel with the click of a button.  I also tried to watch The Strangers but only made it about 2/3rds of the way through.  Had to read the ending on IMDB.  A wimp I am.

On to something happier about the fall season, I made caramel apples today and am going to get apples tomorrow to make applesauce.  And while I’m mentioning food, I made some homemade chicken noodle soup last weekend that was to die for.  Another great thing about fall, hearty soups and a kitchen that smells heavenly.  Well there you have it.  Stay tuned this next week for pics of (cross your fingers) my ghostbuster costume.

Heroes in a Half Shell

Last year I was the grim reaper for Halloween but this year I went as something much cooler…a Ninja Turtle!

“Raphael is cool but crude..Gimmie a break”

Turtle Power!

At the Preschool party I’m about to be attacked by Shrek while Fiona pretends not to notice

Yeah!!  I love Halloween!

Bat Cupcakes

We’re having a Halloween party for the 8-11 yr. old girls I’m a leader over at church this week.  I decided to do something a little different in the way of an invitation so I borrowed this idea I found and voila!

Later today or tomorrow I’ll start on the first round of pumpkin sugar cookies.  I love Halloween!

Even though I stayed home and handed out candy, I didn’t think that was enough of a reason to pass on dressing up.  So at the last minute I put threw this on

I think the kids liked it.  Well, except the one little girl that burst into tears and wouldn’t come up on the porch…whoops.

In the Spirit of Random

So I don’t have an actual blog to write but am taking a cue from Half Full or Half Empty (Glass o Water) and just going to jot out a few random things about today I guess.

I had my one year blogiversary about a week ago or was it two?  I kept meaning to write something but got busy and distracted and never did.  So finally I’m getting around to it – cheers to me!  And while we’re on the subject of anniversaries, today is my third official year of working for the company where I’m at.  I was hired on Halloween and I’m still not sure if it has turned out to be a trick or a treat yet.  I don’t write much about work becuase one, no one really cares what I do, and two I don’t want someone to find this and get me fired for something I may say.  Although, we are closing down in a couple of months so maybe it’s all fair game now….

Well since I’m on the subject of work, I was trying to hurry and get some of the orders out of here ASAP so I could have time to do some blogging and in my hurry this is what happened:

We put all the orders in plastic totes and the sides are sharp little suckers.  This happens frequently and it’s a wonder I have an arm left at all.

Meanwhile, every year the company I work for gives us carmel apples for Halloween.  This is never a treat that I think about but or even crave but when handed to me the yummy goodness all comes back.  Good thing I have floss in my car too!:

Since it’s Halloween there are a lot of employees who are dressed up but I just didn’t feel like it this year.  Instead I wore my scrubs that dub as my pajama bottoms and lounge pants.  They’re pretty much the most awesome pants I’ve ever had.  And since they’re bright orange I figured no one would really mind.  I’ve been told they look like inmate pants and I’m tempted to have Wentworth put across the butt of them.  For those of you who don’t know, Wentworth Miller is the actor in Prison Break.  Here they are (sorry about the angle and shot but it’s hard to take a pic of your own pants):

And since I didn’t bother getting dressed today I decided I wouldn’t bother with my hair either:

Only two hours left until I leave for home and I hope I can make it!  Hope everyone is having a Happy Halloween!

*This blog is brought to you by Nike…Just do it!  HA just kidding – Though I wish they would sponsor me.

For a Lack of Something Better to Write About

Ok, I’m in a funk and need to write something regardless of what it is or I might never come out of it.  Hence this post.  Lately I’ve been reading books by Patricia Cornwell at rapid succession and while I love her series to death (ha pun intended) there comes a point when I need to put the books down.  In case you’re unfamiliar with her stuff it’s about a forensic pathologist so you read about gruesome murders and psycho freaky serial killers.  Her series is fiction but the mind can start to wander and after a bit you really need to focus on things like cotton candy, animal balloons, and  jumping rope.  Unless you see those two dead little girls from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies singing “One, two Freddy’s coming for you…” in which case you should swich to hopscotch.

But going back to candy, possibly one of my most favorite things in the world, I’m debating on whether I should buy some for Halloween or not.  I live in a complex consisting of mostly single people with a few young families mixed in.  I can’t remember if anyone rang our bell last year or not but I don’t want to be unprepared right?  And besides, I can always just eat it for myself if no one comes.  Jr. Mints are my candy of choice.  What could be better than the sweetness of dark chocolate enveloping creamy mint?  Hmm, glad I have a box next to me right now.

On the opposite of candy, I’m on the continuous quest of finding a healthy snack for on the go.  Not as easy as it sounds let me assure you.  I have this thing for wanting bite sized food items like crackers or chips but in a nice convenient bag or box.  Oh and it has to be healthy.  Lately I’ve resorted to Wheat Thins which, while tasting good and semi healthyish, the box isn’t so on-the-go friendly.  However, I did just find tiny bags of mini-carrots in the store which might turn out to be my new thing.  They contain the perfect amount of carrots while being in a nice travel size bag.  Come to think of it, maybe I should pass those out for Halloween along with the little boxes of raisins.  Just kidding, I don’t want some kid to deface my door because I didn’t give him sugar.

I’ve been maintaining gym time everyday which on one hand has been awesome.  When I first started running I could barely run a half mile without hacking up my lungs but I’m up to almost 3 miles now and feel great.  And yes, I realize there are quite a few of you that run marathons which is beyond amazing but as I said, I’m happy to not actually see my lung on the treadmill.  The down side is that I can see myself becoming obsessive with it.  Everyday I fight this urge to become crazy and tell myself to keep going no matter what the consequences as long as the calories are burning.  I also find myself trying to fight off obsessive calorie counting with food (with the exception of Jr. Mints of course).  “If I only eat carrots and wheat thins for breakfast and lunch and still burn X amount of calories running….”  Hey psycho, eat a burger for crying out loud!  Ok, so it isn’t that bad but I can see where it could be.  On the positive, the vegetable section has now become my favorite place in the store and I get kind of excited to see what I can create for dinner each night.  I’ve never been much of a chef…at all…so merely cutting up vegetables and throwing them together to see what I can make is like a mystery being revealed and so far it’s holding my interest.

Hmm, this post has turned into one discussing my dietary habits (or lack thereof) so I’ll just add one more that I noticed recently.  I went over to a friend’s house and realized I bypassed all drink options and went straight for the water.  Why is this odd you may ask.  Well, not so long ago I HATED water.  It was a borring drink and offered nothing other than being wet.  I used to drink coke ALL THE TIME.  Couldn’t get enough.  It was nector of the gods and when I mixed cherry coke and moutain dew (don’t knock it until you try it) I thought I had reached some sort of euphoria.  But my “I expect better of you side” (I hate that side) kicked into high gear and I decided to cut back on the coke.  Not just cut back but I went cold turkey on all carbonation.  I had absolutely no intention of maintaing this other than for a few weeks, just so I could go a few days without the shakes and headaches but one day turned to another, which lead to a week, which became a month.  And before I knew it, it had been over a year and a half sans carbonation.  Oh sure, on those hot, sultry days I can taste the sweet sugary goodness as it cracks the icecubes it’s poured over.  But so far I have not caved.  But in a few months it’ll be summer again and you just never know.  If plain water isn’t cutting it I’ll be crazy and buy a bottle of propel and if I’m really feeling saucy pink lemonade it is.  Anyway, I was surprised to find that I had moved beyond the “I guess I’ll tolerate water because I know I should drink it” stage to the “I really do just want a glass of ice water to quench my thirst” stage.  Not quite euphoric but I’ll take it.
